EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched psychotherapy used to treat post-traumatic stress symptoms. EMDR has been reported to be effective for the following conditions:
-
Panic attacks
-
Complicated grief
-
Disturbing memories
-
General Anxiety
-
Pain Disorders
-
Addictions
-
Depression
-
Guilt
-
Phobias
-
Performance Anxiety
-
Stress Reduction
-
Sexual and/or physical abuse
Ongoing research suggests that many other conditions can also be effectively treated with EMDR.
In 1987, psychologist, Dr. Francine Shapiro, made the observation that eye movements could reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts under certain conditions. EMDR was studied scientifically in 1989 in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, where she reported success in using EMDR to treat trauma victims. Since then EMDR has been further researched and has evolved into a therapy used all over the world. More general and research information can be found at www.emdria.org, EMDR International Association’s website.

Approximately 20 controlled studies have examined the effects of EMDR therapy which have consistently found EMDR to be effective in decreasing and eliminating the symptoms of post-traumatic stress for a majority of clients. The American Psychiatric Association and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies both designate EMDR as an effective treatment. EMDR was also found effective by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, the Department of Defense, the United Kingdom Department of Health, the Israel National Council for Mental Health and many other international health and governmental agencies.
